Official figures have revealed that adults in Scotland are consuming 23% more alcohol than the adults in England and Wales. The report found that the percentage represented the biggest difference recorded during the 17 years of measuring the gap.

Of all the beverages, wine accounted for the largest rise in consumption, with sales more than doubling since the mid 1990s. Next to it stands the alcopops and ready mixed drinks. While the sale of beer, cider and fortified wine had fallen and the spirit sales had remained constant.

The researchers also found that 22.8 units of alcohol is being consumed per week by each adult in Scotland, instead of 21 units of alcohol recommended for men per week. The impact of this excessive consumption of alcohol results in an estimated cost of 3.56 pounds each year which makes it 900 pounds for every adult.

The NHS Health Scotland has already taken some steps to prevent the problems caused due to excessive alcohol consumption. They have also created a frame work that outlines a package of 40 measures to reduce alcohol related harm. As a part of its monitoring and evaluating Scotland’s Alcohol strategy, NHS also produced an update of alcohol sales and price band analysis.

Increase in the cost of living and the relative cost of alcohol being higher are not showing any affects on the alcohol consumption. Instead, the rate is increasing and the sales and consumption remain higher in Scotland than in England and Wales.

Hence the authorities decided to prevent this problem using tax and duty and to improve alcohol education to better tackle the cultural and social reasons for higher consumption in Scotland.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) is a national public health agency in the Department of Health and Human Services. The mission of the agency is to minimize the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on the communities of America. A new national study conducted by the SAMHSA showed that there was a 55 percent increase in emergency department visits for drug-related suicide attempts by men aged between 21 to 34, from 2005 to 2009.

Apart from the misuse of the prescription drugs, even illicit drug abuse is found to be responsible for increased deaths among Americans. Illicit drugs including marijuana, cocaine, heroin and so on are being used commonly by the people of the United States. Many warning signs like displaying mood swings, increasing use of alcohol or drugs, withdrawing or feeling isolated, and so on should be noted among substance users. In order to save lives, it is necessary to create awareness about the warning signs and risk factors for suicide including the use of alcohol and drugs.

Amphetamine is a stimulant which can be detected using immunoassay test. The route of administration is through injections, oral, smoking or sniffing. They can be detected till 12 hours in blood, 3days in saliva, 1-4 days in urine, and up to 90 days in hair.

Opiates are very old drugs which are derived from opium poppy. Immunoassay is used for primary detection. It is detected up to 2-4 days in urine and up to 90 days in hair.

Phencyclidine or PCP is cheap but popularly used drug among selected socio economic groups. It is administered either orally, or smoking or could be injected.

The elderly have are the important group of people who require special attention with respect to their health issues. However, many of the older adults are used to alcohol abuse. Several risk factors are associated to influence alcohol abuse in seniors. They include stress factors like loss of spouses or loved ones, cessation of employment, loss of income, diminished social networks, and increased health problems.

At the older age, the most common thing everyone faces is loneliness. It may be of many reasons. Older adults often feel bored with retirement. They lose their work-related relationships, friends and support networks. Also, the losses occurred by relocation or death of spouse also tends to make then feel isolated. This loneliness is considered to be the major risk factor that makes the elderly to use alcohol.

Older adults suffer from different physical and mental health issues. Unexplained and unbearable pain due to physical health problems tend them to seek for self-medication. As a result, they drink alcohol to get relief from the pain. Sometimes, they often mix the prescription drugs with alcohol and consume. Also, to get away from depression, stress, and other mental issues, they get addicted to alcohol. Certain physiological changes accompanying the aging process can affect vision and ambulation. With these, they are unable to drive and are always dependent on others. These factors also influence them to take alcohol. Financial problems with decreased income due to retirement or death of a spouse also increases stress levels thereby rising the risk of alcohol abuse.

With hormonal changes at menopause, elderly women often get habituated to drink and this further increases the chances of breast cancer. Depression, stress and other factors also influence older women to alcohol abuse.

As you know, drug abuse is categorized into five different stages including experimenting with drugs, habitual use, drug abuse, dependence and addiction. Habitual use is the second stage of drug addiction. At this stage, the individual starts using the illicit drugs more regularly with a desire and like in the effects of these drugs. Many people manage to be at this stage of drug usage. However, it depends on the individual characteristics, type of drug used, and the frequency of use. But there are many risks associated with habitual drug usage. Have a look on a few of them.

Substance abuse is illegal and it can influence the people to suffer from criminal behavior. Even handling, usage, purchasing and selling of these drugs is illegal and if one is found with any of these, he or she has to face a lot of dangerous legal issues.

Habitual drug usage promotes several mental health problems such as depression and anxiety. In addition, if individuals suffering from mental health disorders get habituated to the illicit drugs, their disease symptoms are further increased.

Using drugs regularly also causes damage to internal organs. Both recreational or occasional and habitual drug use has serious effects on brain, liver and heart.

Driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol rises the risk of accidents. Also certain accidents at workplace may occur because of the employees who are habituated to drug usage.

It may happen that while using drugs regularly, there may be an occasional overdose. However, this poses much higher risk.

It can even lead to full-blown addiction. Once a person gets addicted, many serious health issues and even death may result.

These risks are often dangerous for the abusers and even for the people surrounding them.

Cocaine is one of the most addictive drugs used throughout the world. It is an alkaloid obtained from the leaves of cocoa plant. Cocaine is a central nervous system stimulant and gives a euphoric and energetic feel to the user. Based on the route of administration and dosage of the drug, the duration of euphoric effects of cocaine varies. Some of the short-term effects of cocaine usage are listed here.

Decrease in Appetite:
Cocaine decreases appetite and the user does not feel like eating anything. So the person loses weight and one can easily find it a sign for cocaine abuse.

Increase in Blood Pressure and Heart Beat:
Cocaine abuse increases blood pressure and heart rate. The effect is seen immediately after the drug consumption and can last for a long time.

Constriction of Blood Vessels:
The drug is responsible for constriction of blood vessels. It is because of this reason that there is an increase in blood pressure.

Apart from these, the other short-term effects of the drug include dilated pupils and rise in temperature. Large dosage of cocaine consumption may include effects such as restlessness, hallucinations, hyperactivity, talkativeness and irritability. A person should be advised to stop the drug consumption, immediately on finding the short term effects. Otherwise it may lead to many other long-term effects damaging the entire health of the user.

Today, a significant number of drug abusers are employed. According to National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), almost seventy percent (66.6 percent) of the drug abusers were employed either full or part time in 2009. It clearly shows that many workplaces are vulnerable to drug related accidents or other issues. With the increasing drug abusers becoming part of the workforce, identifying the drug abusers at workplace became necessary.

Drug testing at workplaces became one of the common and the most reliable methods to ensure safe working environment. Of all the testing methods used by the employers, random drug testing is considered as the most effective one as the employees tend to deter drug abuse in wake of random testing.

Random drug testing means, conducting the drug test at any time without any prior intimation. One or two employees will be picked randomly to conduct the drug test. This makes employees stay away from drugs. Many reports have shown that the companies employing random drug testing and pre employment drug testing have constantly reduced drug abuse menace among their employees.

Apart from workplaces, random drug testing is generally conducted at schools and other organizations.

Drugs are the chemicals, which have susceptible impact on neuro-chemical balance of human brain that effects feelings and actions of an individual. Abusing drugs often or regularly leads to addiction. Although there is no particular age limit for drug addiction, earlier abuse causes more serious drug addiction.

Reasons for addiction
Every abuser has a different reason for drug abuse or addiction. Mostly to escape from problems, people abuse drugs, and become addicted. Many factors influence the individuals like social environment, person’s biology, and age. Family, friends, life style of individual contribute to drug abuse. Critical stages of life along with genetic, and environmental factors also affect drug addiction susceptibility.

Effects of addiction
Complications of drug addiction are very high and it is like a disease that affects brain, and total functioning of the body. Brain’s communication system is affected with the chemicals present in drugs as they disrupt the process of information flow to nerve cells. Short and long term effects are seen in the abuse due to drug addiction.

Short term: The chemicals present in the drugs will blow into the brain’s communication system. These chemicals can disturb the functioning of the “reward circuit” of the brain. Many short-term consequences are observed in abuser’s health and avoiding drug abuse can help in overcoming the short-term consequences. Sleeplessness, irritability, anxiety, running nose, nausea, vomiting, muscle pain, depression, headache, dizziness, effects on memory and respiratory problems etc are found with short term drug addiction.

Long term: Serious long-term effects are found with drug abuse and addiction changes brain chemical system and circuit. These effects can lead from mild itching to coma and to death of the drug abuser. This addiction facilitates the user in experiencing uncontrollable cravings particularly when they see place or person associated with drug. High drug addiction can lead for infectious diseases, breathing related diseases, veins, or nervous collapse, and abuser can even die in minutes in certain situations.

The above addressed information about reasons and effects of drug abuse and addiction can be useful in preventing drug abuse. Prevention programs and educating the people about effects can be helpful in preventing drug abuse and addiction in society. If it is not controlled at right time, these drugs can become masters of abuser’s life. The consequences of addiction of drug can be overwhelming to both the user and to the user’s family members.

The effect-of-Cocaine use on the brain has been studied by scientists, mainly to find out the secret that why cocaine is addictive and if once started why is it too difficult to stop taking it.

There are centres which support the feelings of pleasure and euphoria in deep in the brain, these are called as reward centres. This reward centre is associated by the release of a chemical is called as dopamine. Feelings of euphoria and pleasure is allowed by Dopamine. Generally reward centre releases the dopamine in to small gaps between the neurons in the brain. Gaps are binded with proteins by it and appropriate signals are sent to the brain. The gap is left eventually by the dopamine.

This process is disturbed by cocaine substance abuse. The dopamine is blocked by the cocaine from leaving the gaps between the neurons of brain. At initial people get pleasure by use cocaine and to get same effect they required more and more cocaine. Finally the brain becomes weak.
