Today, a significant number of drug abusers are employed. According to National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), almost seventy percent (66.6 percent) of the drug abusers were employed either full or part time in 2009. It clearly shows that many workplaces are vulnerable to drug related accidents or other issues. With the increasing drug abusers becoming part of the workforce, identifying the drug abusers at workplace became necessary.

Drug testing at workplaces became one of the common and the most reliable methods to ensure safe working environment. Of all the testing methods used by the employers, random drug testing is considered as the most effective one as the employees tend to deter drug abuse in wake of random testing.

Random drug testing means, conducting the drug test at any time without any prior intimation. One or two employees will be picked randomly to conduct the drug test. This makes employees stay away from drugs. Many reports have shown that the companies employing random drug testing and pre employment drug testing have constantly reduced drug abuse menace among their employees.

Apart from workplaces, random drug testing is generally conducted at schools and other organizations.
